P6 November News

1st Dec 2021

Literacy

In November we learned about prefixes. Prefixes can be found at the beginning of words and they change the meaning of the word.

Re means again e.g Redo

Pre means before e.g Preview   Prefixes were very fun to learn about.

We learned about statements, orders and questions. We were given a sentence and had to say if it was a statement, order or a question. “Can I go to the bathroom?” is a  question,  “the fox has a long tail” is a statement and “Get out!” is an order.  I loved this subject.

We also got to learn about Anne Frank. This was my favourite Literacy lesson. We wrote a diary entry and we covered the windows with black card. We had to pretend to be Anne Frank in the annex and keep very quiet so that the German soldiers wouldn’t find us. There was a loud knock at our classroom door but we were so quiet that whoever was on the other side didn’t even know we were in the classroom.

We learned about apostrophes. We had lots of different sentences and we had to add the apostrophe to the correct place. An example is  the hat of the lady,  this would change to the lady’s hat. I didn’t mind learning about apostrophes.

We learned about the features of a newspaper report. Everyone created a plan for their own report. This week everyone will write a newspaper report. The headline of my report is Nathan’s Natural November find.

Numeracy

In numeracy this month we have been learning about identifying triangles. There are four types of triangles. These are isosceles triangles, equilateral triangles, scalene triangles and  right angle triangles. An isosceles triangle has two equal sides and two equal angles. An equilateral triangle is where all of the sides and angles are equal. A scalene triangle is the opposite of an equilateral triangle, all of its sides and angles are different. A right angle triangle always has a right angle which is 90 degrees.

The next thing in numeracy we learned was to find angles in triangles. We know that the angles inside a triangle always add up to 180 degrees.  If a scalene triangle had two angles which were 94 degrees and 43 degrees we would add them together and take our answer away from 180 to find the third angle.

The next thing we learned was how to use coordinates. An example of a coordinate is ( -4, 8). We would find that coordinate on our grid  and then put a dot where we found it. We also go along the x axis first and then up the y axis.  We plotted coordinates to make a helicopter.

This month we also learned how to multiply by 10, 100 and 1000. It was really easy because all you had to do was add one zero to multiply by 10, two zeroes to multiply by 100 and three zeros to multiply by 1000.

Anti - Bullying week

During Anti-bullying week the theme was one kind word. Which means one kind word can make a person's day. We had to make posters for this theme and Mae Quinn and Joseph Collins won.  We listened to a story called

Have you filled your bucket today? By Carol McCloud and we found out that everyone has an invisible bucket with them that holds all their good thoughts and feelings.  We need each other to help keep our buckets full.

You can be a bucket filler or a bucket dipper. A bucket filler is when you do something nice for someone.  A bucket dipper is when you make someone feel bad or do something mean and you take good feelings out of their buckets.

We made a display for Anti-bullying week. On the display you can see buckets and on the buckets we wrote how other people could fill our buckets with kindness and what we are going to do to fill other people's buckets up. We also had to make hearts for other people in our class. We wrote a kind message on the hearts. We had to pick a name out of a pot and write a nice message for them to help fill their buckets with good thoughts.

Worry monster also came to our classroom to help us with any worries that we might be facing in Primary 6.

VIKINGS

We have been learning about the Vikings. The Vikings have different types of weapons. They used weapons like spears and swords. The best viking warriors were called Berserkers. We designed our very own Viking shields to help us in battle.

Vikings also had a different religion. They were not catholic but they did believe in a type of heaven. They believed that when they died naturally they would go to Asgard but if they died in battle they would go to Valhalla. The Vikings had lots of different gods but the chief god was Odin. Odin was the father of Thor.

Materials

MATERIALS

In November we started to learn about materials. Did you know that there are human-made materials and natural materials? For example a piece of wood is a natural material and glass is a  human-made material. Man-made materials can also be called manufactured materials. Natural materials come from under-ground. We also learned that materials have different properties such as being hard,  transparent and absorbent.

ART

We completed lots of different art activities including optical illusion art and sugar skull art. It was lots of fun!
