March in Primary 5!

1st Apr 2026

We began the month by celebrating World Book Day. The children took part in an interactive online quiz, designed creative alternative covers for their favourite books, and had great fun dressing up as much-loved characters from our favourite books!

Primary 5 embraced a modern twist for our Green Day Irish performance this year. After weeks of enthusiastic rehearsal, the children proudly presented their rendition of “Killeagh” as Gaeilge and delivered a powerful performance of An Haka Gaelach. We also thoroughly enjoyed coming to school dressed in green to celebrate the occasion in style!

In Art, creativity was in full swing as we designed and constructed our own leprechauns. Using paper fasteners, we gave them moving legs so they could dance a lively jig—much to everyone’s delight! We also decorated crosses as part of our learning about Holy Week, helping us to understand the significance of Easter in our Religion lessons.

For Mother’s Day, Primary 5 wanted to show just how much our wonderful mums mean to us. The children created beautiful and thoughtful cards with the themes “You are tea-rrific” and “We love you a latte!” Alongside this, they wrote heartfelt poems, carefully selected their mums’ favourite chocolates, and chose a favourite hot drink to make their day extra special.

In Literacy, we have been exploring figurative language through the creation of quatrains and simile poems. The children produced imaginative simile poems about the moon and descriptive quatrains inspired by waterfalls, linking their work to our World Around Us lesson on Niagara Falls. We also created detailed fact files on sea creatures, following research into their habitats, diets, and appearances as part of our Blue Planet topic.

In Numeracy, Primary 5 have been learning about area and perimeter. The children designed their own houses, calculating the area and perimeter of each room as well as the total size of their home. We also began exploring data handling by surveying classmates on favourite animals, foods, and colours, and presenting the results in colourful pictograms. We rounded off our Numeracy learning this term with the exciting “Skittles Challenge” . The children created tally charts to record how many of each colour were in their packets, before presenting their findings using bar charts. They then interpreted one another’s charts, making observations about the data and answering a range of questions that helped revise their understanding of mass, multiplication, subtraction, addition and division. To top it all off, everyone enjoyed eating the Skittles as a well-deserved treat after all their hard work!
