June in Primary One.
30th Jun 2026
June was a busy and exciting month in Primary One. We continued exploring our topic of water and enjoyed learning about pirates across many areas of the curriculum. In numeracy, the children counted gold coins, sorted pirate treasures and practised addition and subtraction to five using both the interactive whiteboard and practical resources. They also explored measure by using cubes to compare the length of different objects, including the caterpillars they made from Play Doh.
Our literacy lessons focused on revising Letterland sounds, writing words and simple sentences, improving letter formation and remembering to use capital letters correctly.
A highlight of the month was watching our real caterpillars grow and change as part of our Hungry Caterpillar topic. The children were fascinated as they observed the life cycle first-hand, from tiny caterpillars to chrysalises, and celebrated when one butterfly successfully emerged before being released into the wild. We used butterflies to help us learn doubles in numeracy and created symmetrical butterfly paintings by folding painted paper in half. In art, the children also designed pirate hats using black paper and chalk and made colourful butterfly pictures with oil pastels.
The lovely weather meant we spent lots of time learning outdoors. The children worked together to build pirate ships using loose parts, enjoyed the sand and water trays and developed their gross motor skills through hopping, skipping and jumping games. They also had plenty of opportunities to use chalk outdoors and to work cooperatively with their friends. Indoors, our pirate-themed role play area was very popular, with imaginative play using the pirate boat, sand and gold coins. The children also spent time building with Lego and Play Doh, creating pirate ships, butterflies, houses and many other imaginative models.
In World Around Us, we learned about water safety and discussed how to stay safe during the summer holidays. In RE, we thought about the joys of summertime, drew pictures of our favourite summer activities and thanked God for the season. We continued developing our coding skills by giving Bee Bot clear instructions before extending our learning with Bee Bot activities on the iPads. The children also enjoyed using Reading Eggs, Mathseeds, painting apps and dinosaur jigsaws.
We celebrated Gingerbread’s fourth birthday with a teddy bears’ picnic. The children brought their favourite teddies to school, carefully followed instructions to make their own jam sandwiches and packed everything up before enjoying a special trip to the park together. Sports Day was another highlight, with everyone taking part in races, beanbag challenges, sack races, bat and ball, balancing activities and hoops. To finish the month, the children proudly received their Sports Day medals during a special presentation from Jarlath Burns, President of the GAA.
It was a wonderful month filled with learning, creativity and fun, and we are very proud of everything the children achieved. Thank you to all our P1 parents for your support and gifts throughout the year.
Have a safe Summer…Mrs. Lennon.
