January in Primary 5!

30th Jan 2026

Primary 5 have had a fantastic start to the year! Our classroom has been full of creativity, curiosity, and enthusiasm as we dive into our new learning themes.

In Literacy, we have been exploring narrative writing through the much‑loved novel The BFG by Roald Dahl. Pupils have been learning about the key features of narrative writing and experimenting with figurative language, including similes, metaphors, alliteration, and onomatopoeia. A particular highlight has been creating vivid descriptions of their very own giants, using powerful adjectives and adverbs to bring these imaginative characters to life.

In Numeracy, we have been strengthening our understanding of place value, addition, and subtraction, while also working hard to master our times tables. Each week, pupils take part in a times tables challenge, aiming to beat their personal best. Their hard work is already paying off, and we are delighted with the progress so far! We also enjoyed playing “Who Am I?” to put our 3D shape knowledge to the test.

Our World Around Us topic this term is Ancient Egypt, which has captured the children’s imaginations. Using atlases, we located Egypt and its key geographical features before exploring daily life in ancient times. Pupils learned about the mummification process, studied the roles of the Pharaohs, and created vibrant painted Pharaoh portraits. We are excited to continue this topic in ICT, where pupils will use the Minecraft app to design and build famous Egyptian landmarks.

In Religion, we have been learning about how God called Moses and gave him the Ten Commandments. We also reflected on how God calls each of us to live like Jesus and created our own personal commandments to help guide our daily actions. We also celebrated Grandparent’s Day as part of Catholic School’s week and enjoyed drawing portraits, writing prayers and creating cards for our grandparents.

We were delighted to welcome Young Enterprise NI, who delivered an engaging workshop on the topic “Our City.” Pupils learned how money is spent within a city and even designed their own restaurant, considering target audience, menu choices, and appropriate pricing.

It has been a wonderful month in Primary 5, and we are very much looking forward to all the learning and adventures that February will bring!
