A Fantastic Few Weeks of Learning in Primary Three

Primary Three have had an incredibly busy and enjoyable start to the term. We were delighted to welcome Miss McGee into our classroom and the children have thoroughly impressed her with their hard work, creativity and enthusiasm for learning. The room has been full of activity, laughter and energy as we explored new topics and developed new skills across all of our lessons.

Literacy

Our Literacy work has been centred around traditional and alternative fairy tales. We began by reading the well‑known story The Three Little Pigs, which the children absolutely loved. They showed great confidence as they acted out the story, taking on the roles of the pigs, the wolf and the narrator. Their performances were full of expression and fun and it was wonderful to see everyone working together.

The children then created detailed wanted posters for the Big Bad Wolf, carefully describing his appearance, his actions and why he was causing so much trouble. We also spent time making and painting our own story characters to display in the classroom, adding colour and creativity to our learning space.

To deepen our understanding of the story, the class sequenced the events in order and discussed the characters’ choices. They then used their imaginations to write brand‑new endings, which ranged from funny, to surprising, to very clever.

We also explored the story The Three Little Unicorns and the Big Bad Dragon. Before finishing the book, the children made thoughtful predictions about how they believed the story would end. Afterwards, they became authors, writing their own exciting versions of the story with new settings, characters and plot twists.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, the class have continued to develop their confidence with number work. We have been practising partitioning two‑digit numbers into tens and units, using concrete materials, drawing representations and using mental strategies. The children are becoming much more secure in recognising the value of each digit and explaining their reasoning.

We also explored 2D shapes in more detail and used them to design and create colourful houses. This activity allowed the children to talk about shape properties, such as the number of sides and corners, while also linking their work to our topic in World Around Us.

We have also spent time ordering numbers in a variety of ways including from smallest to largest, largest to smallest, and by identifying missing numbers in sequences. The children worked very well both independently and in groups to complete these challenges.

World Around Us

Our current topic is Houses and Homes, and the children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the world around them. We began by learning about different types of houses in our local area. The class looked at bungalows, semi‑detached homes, terraced houses, detached houses and apartments. To support this learning, we went on a walk around our school community to identify and discuss the different types of buildings we could see. The children were very observant and engaged throughout the walk.

Linking our topic to science, we carried out a practical investigation inspired by The Three Little Pigs. The children tested a range of materials to find out which would be the most waterproof, the strongest and the heaviest. They carefully recorded their predictions, carried out fair tests and discussed their results. This activity helped them learn about material properties in a fun, meaningful and memorable way.

PDMU

In PDMU, we have had important discussions about keeping ourselves healthy and safe. We talked about how to look after both our bodies and our minds, and the children contributed many thoughtful ideas. We have also explored how to keep safe at home and in our local community, including learning about road safety and the importance of making sensible choices.

A Wonderful Start to the Term

It has been a truly enjoyable and productive time in Primary Three. The children have shown excellent behaviour, enthusiasm for learning and kindness towards each other. We are very proud of their efforts and look forward to many more exciting lessons and adventures in the weeks ahead.
