December in Primary 5 🎄
17th Dec 2025
We have had a fantastic close to term 1 in Primary 5.
In literacy, we wrote a set of instructions on how to make a Christmas tree decoration. We made sure that we used imperative verbs, adverbs, time connectives and subheadings. We also spent some time learning about poetry. We compared and contrasted four different poems all about Christmas. We then wrote our own kenning poems about a chosen Christmas character. We had great fun performing these poems for the class and guessing who each person was describing in their poem.
In numeracy, one of the topics we explored was measuring weight. We estimated how much different objects in our classroom would weigh and then we saw how close we were after putting them on the scales. We compared the unfamiliar object with something that we already knew the weight of. This helped us to make better estimates!
We also enjoyed using Just 2 Easy to present data in the form of a pie chart. We carried out our class survey on what our favourite Christmas dessert was. We also developed the skill of interpreting pie charts. Well done to Kayleigh on her pie chart work being displayed on the ‘Our Best Work’ board for January.
In World Around Us, we carried out some research on how farming has changed over time. We even found some things that have stayed the same. We finished off the term with a Kahoot quiz on all of our learning this term. Well done Laoise, Odhran, Ceada, Iona and Odhran on being in the top 5. Friday 5th December was a memorable day when we had our Christmas Dinner day. It was delicious! On December 9th we had a wonderful visit from Newry Chamber Music with a performance of, ‘The Snowman’.
