P5 February News

2nd Mar 2023

We started February with the celebration of Ireland's female St. Bridget. Mrs Kathleen Loye (ex Vice-Princpal) came into our classroom and demonstrated how to make a St. Bridget's Day cross. Then we each made a cross with Mrs Murray and Norah our classroom assistant. It was hard work!!

P5 visited the Navan Centre in Armagh to learn about the Ancient Egyptians. We had a great day out. We located Egypt on a map and then talked about its landscape and buildings. Next we discussed Ancient Egyptian Gods and participated in role play by pretending that we were the Gods. Then we met an Ancient Egyptian farmer and his slave. They were very funny. They were dressed up and told us about their daily life while living in Ancient Egypt. Then we learned about the process of Mummification by removing parts of the dead body and putting them in canopic jars. Lastly, we took turns and wrapped Ella up like a mummy.  It was a very enjoyable day out.

We made some crowns fit for a Pharaoh. We wrote our names in hieroglyphics on a cartouche and displayed them in our classroom.

We also created a colourful display for Lent. On Ash Wednesday Canon Toner visited our school and we received ashes. Then we made our Lenten promises. This year we focused on selecting something from these 3 categories - Pray, Fast and Give.

A special mention goes to our classmates and choir, who competed in the Warrenpoint Feis in Irish Singing.  Cian came 1st and Colm came 2nd in the individual competitions. Fantastic achievements.

Congratulations to the children in P5 who gained a weekly certificate in Mathletics and Reading Eggs during the month of February. Well done to the children that received a Pupil of the Week reward.
