P6 October News

26th Oct 2021

Slieve Gullion

P6 went up Slieve Gullion. It was very cold. Colum,Phill and Sammy were the leaders. They gave P6 boots, gloves, hats and bags. There was a small tunnel halfway up the mountain. When we got to the top of the mountain Colm told us about Finn McCool and the witches' cave at the top of the mountain. It was very cold. We could see all the Irish Sea. We climbed down the mountain and we stopped to eat our lunch. When we were half way down the mountain we made loads of hot chocolate. It was yummy. We played I spy on the bus.  My favourite part of the day was drinking hot chocolate!

Numeracy

In numeracy we learnt about metres, centimetres and kilommetres. There are 100cm in a 1 metre and 1000m in 1km. We learnt about using doubles to add and to find halves off numbers. We also did lots of adding and taking away. It was very hard because we used tens, hundreds and thousands. My favourite lesson was using doubles.

Literacy

In Literacy we have been learning about alphabetical order. I found alphabetical order quite easy. We have also been learning about synonyms. Synonyms are basically words with a similar meaning, the synonym of drowsy would be sleepy.

We wrote a biography about Roald Dahl. It was quite fun but it took me forever to finish. Did you know that Roald Dahl married an actress called Patrica Neal? They had five beautiful children called Olivia,Tessa,Theo,Ophelia and Lucy. His first book was called The Gremlins. We also wrote ryhming and acroustic poems about Autumn and Halloween. It was so much fun.

Topic

The Human Body

In Topic we have been learning about the Respiratory system. Inside your chest there are two stretchy,sponge-like organs called Lungs. Our Lungs help us to breath in Oxygen from the air. You breath in with your nose and mouth. We also learnt about Digestion. Our body takes what we need from the food as it passes through our Digestion system and gets rid of the left over waste. We also learnt about the dangers of Alcohol. Alcohol can stop your brain from working properly,it can irritate your stomach and it can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. It can also make you liver stop working and it can weaken the heart. It can also cause your Oesophagus to bleed.

The Vikings

Vikings grew, hunted or caught everything they ate.  Most of the cooking was done by the women. They would grow leeks, turnips and carrots. Some of their food came from the animals that they had on their farms. Vikings did not speak English. They had their own language and their own alphabet. It was called the Futhark. Viking clothes were hand made. They were made from wool, leather or animal skins.
